Didier ZAKINE

Sheep in the Box screens in Competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival
The Palme d’Or winner returns to Cannes Competition with a 127-minute near-future drama starring Haruka Ayase as a mother who replaces her dead son with a humanoid robot. Neon holds US, UK and Australia rights. Sales via Gaga and Goodfellas.
There is a question that hovers over every great filmmaker’s late career: what do you do after you have made your masterpiece? For Hirokazu Kore-eda, who won the Palme d’Or in 2018 with Shoplifters and has since continued to expand his range — from Korean-language Broker to the formally audacious Monster — the answer turns out to be something nobody saw coming. Sheep in the Box is a sci-fi film, a new direction entirely for a director whose cinema has always been rooted in the textures of domestic realism. The pivot is not a gimmick. It is, if anything, the most logical extension of everything Kore-eda has ever cared about. Gulf Today

Spain at Cannes 2026: Three Films in Competition,
For the first time ever, three Spanish productions compete for the Palme d’Or simultaneously — Almodóvar, Los Javis and Sorogoyen lead a delegation that stretches across every section of the 79th edition, which kicks off tonight on the Croisette.
The poster says everything you need to know about the spirit Cannes has chosen to project in 2026. The 79th Festival de Cannes, which opens tonight and runs through May 23, has placed Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis’s iconic Thelma & Louise on its official artwork, marking 35 years since Ridley Scott’s outlaw road movie rewrote the rules of what a film about women could look like and who it could speak to. The choice is not accidental. This is a festival that arrives in a moment of global uncertainty projecting defiance, freedom and a rigorous belief in the political power of cinema. Gulf Today
For Spain, that defiance has a very specific shape this year: three films in the Palme d’Or Competition, a milestone without precedent in the country’s relationship with the world’s most important film festival.
